#4 – Final Project Ideas
For my final project, I want to focus on one of the new developments in Harvard Square. There are many small businesses that I am saddened to see close, and I am hopeful about the new developments coming to the square. There are a few buildings and complexes that I am eager to learn more about, and I hope that through my research project, I will be able to present some new ideas for one of these developments.
The first possibility is the Abbot, or 20 Brattle Street. When I first stepped into the square, one of the first things that caught my eye was the charming Curious George store. To me, the shop was a testament to the character and charm of the historic square. Since its closure, I have been very curious about the development of the building. The building sits at the heart of the square, and its contents has an immense impact on the pedestrian culture of the area. Today, both Jefes and Starbucks have moved into the building. Much of the remaining space, however, seems to be unoccupied, and I am eager to learn more about the development’s plans.
The next option that I am interested in is the Garage. The Garage is reportedly being renovated next year, and it presents great opportunities for revamping the area. Many of the businesses in the Garage have already closed or moved (such as Starbucks and Jefes), but I am curious what merchants will be replacing them. The large brick building presents a great opportunity for a mall-like complex with an interior space connecting different vendors. Many of the best spots in the square are spread out, and such a centralized hub would be a great attraction for students and tourists alike. I have long thought that the Garage could be greatly improved, and I am excited about the possibilities of the coming development.
The final choice for my final project is the old Harvard Square Theater. As a film fanatic, I have long wanted a theater in the square that screens modern blockbusters. In addition, Church street has sadly become a much quieter, almost abandoned, street in recent years. Every time I pass the theater, I am hopeful that it will be revived one day. I believe the current owner has halted plans for its redevelopment, but I would love to see the theater returned to its prior glory. In addition, I think the theater presents a great opportunity for a live performance venue, which would be greatly enjoyed by students and local artists.
